1. Kyun?

Why Do I Need One?

“I have investments and insurance. Isn’t that enough?”

Suppose your investments are worth ₹10 lakh, the market suddenly falls 25%, and you urgently need ₹1 lakh for an unforeseen crisis. If you sell investments during a market dip, you lock in losses and damage your compounding journey. If you borrow, high-interest personal loans or credit cards eat into future income. An emergency fund protects you from both pitfalls.

Role 1

Investments

Designed to grow your wealth over the long haul. Not meant to be liquidated during sudden market drops.

Role 2

Insurance

Covers catastrophic risk (hospitalization, demise). Doesn't pay for immediate daily living expenses, car repairs, or job transitions.

Role 3

Emergency Fund

Handles urgent cash needs instantly, including daily sustenance and expenses insurance excludes.

2. Kitna?

How Much Is Enough?

“₹50,000? ₹5 lakh? Arre bhai, exactly kitna?”

Start with 3–6 months of essential expenses: Ideal for stable salaried professionals with predictable cash flow and low debt.

Consider 6–12 months: If your income is irregular (freelancers, business owners), you work in a volatile industry, or several family members depend solely on your earnings.

Expenses to Count
  • • House rent or Home/Vehicle EMIs
  • • Groceries, milk, and basic household supplies
  • • Utility bills (Electricity, water, gas, Wi-Fi)
  • • Children's school fees & education
  • • Insurance premiums (monthly equivalent)
  • • Regular medicines & routine healthcare
  • • Essential commuting and fuel
Expenses NOT to Count
  • • Weekend mall shopping & luxury splurges
  • • Fine dining and weekend party outings
  • • OTT subscriptions and entertainment budgets
  • • Vacation fund contributions
  • • Gadget upgrades or new electronics

3. Kahan?

Where Should I Keep It?

“Stocks? Gold? Or under my mattress?”

Keep it safe and accessible. Returns come after those needs. The sole goal of this capital is to rescue you in an emergency, not to beat the equity market index! Here is a battle-tested way to structure it:

1. Instant Rescue (Around 1 Month's Expenses)

Park this in a separate bank savings account (not your daily UPI spending account). You need immediate ATM or debit card access even at 2 AM.

2. Backup Cushion (Next 2–3 Months' Expenses)

Keep in sweep-in FDs or short-term bank fixed deposits with premature withdrawal facility via mobile banking. They earn steady interest while remaining 100% principal-safe.

3. Extra Cushion (Remaining Balance)

Additional accessible bank deposits or suitable liquid mutual funds (if you understand credit quality, interest-rate sensitivity, and T+1 day redemption cycles).

Important Caution: Always check withdrawal conditions and premature penalties before locking money in term deposits. Note that liquid mutual funds are market-linked instruments without government guarantees, and redemptions are subject to banking cut-off timings.
4. Kaise?

How Do I Build It?

“Great idea — but where will the money come from?”

Start with small milestones: Don't feel overwhelmed by a ₹2 Lakh target. Aim for your first ₹25,000 or 1 month's expenses first. Hitting milestones builds massive psychological momentum.

Automate transfers on salary day: Set up a standing instruction for the 1st or 2nd of every month. For irregular income, set aside a predetermined percentage (e.g. 15-20%) of every invoice payment received.

The compounding math of consistency: If your target is ₹1,20,000, saving ₹5,000 monthly builds ₹60,000 in Year 1 and the full ₹1,20,000 in Year 2 — completely excluding accrued bank interest!

Windfall acceleration: Direct 50% of annual bonuses, tax refunds, or increments directly into your emergency reserve until the target is fulfilled. Treat it like a non-negotiable bill you pay to your future self!

5. Kab?

When Should I Use It?

Before tapping into your emergency corpus, ask these 3 simple gatekeeper questions:

Question 1
Is it unexpected?
Question 2
Is it necessary?
Question 3
Is it urgent?
YES — Valid Emergencies
  • ✓ Involuntary job loss or temporary loss of income
  • ✓ Urgent medical treatment or uncovered hospital expenses
  • ✓ Critical car engine breakdown or essential vehicle repairs
  • ✓ Severe plumbing leak or emergency home damage
NO — Not an Emergency
  • ✕ Upgrading to the latest iPhone or flagship gadget
  • ✕ Booking discounted flash flight tickets for vacations
  • ✕ Great deals during online festive shopping sales
  • ✕ Predictable school fees or annual insurance premiums (plan for these separately!)

The Replenishment Rule: If life forces you to dip into your emergency reserve, pause discretionary lifestyle upgrades and prioritize rebuilding the fund immediately. Review your target annually as family expenses or loans evolve.

Your Plan B Starts Today

Ask yourself: “Agar kal emergency aa gayi, toh mera Plan B kya hai?”

You don’t need a massive salary to build financial security. Start small. Save regularly. Give yourself and your family the calm confidence to say, “I’ve got this.”
